Osteopenia
By Editor
At this day and age people are becoming more concerned with regard to their health and general well-being. With the proliferation of infomercials and health clubs, people, young and old are considered more well-informed and educated when it comes to health and fitness, than the previous generations. People are more familiar with the condition called osteoporosis, by means of TV commercials, posters, billboards, food labels and the like, than osteopenia.
Osteopenia, which is a forerunner of osteoporosis, refers to bone mineral density or BMD that is lower than the normal BMD but not at a low level, enough to be categorized as osteoporosis. Unexpectedly, most people are unacquainted with this condition, when in fact this condition is very prevalent in the general population, in the USA alone, some 21.8 million American women and another 11.8 million men have osteopenia.
